Around Kalkan
Kalkan by day is sleepy and relaxed but comes to life in the evening when you are treated to a seemingly endless array of tempting restaurants. Kalkan has a pretty pebble beach with sunbedsto hire, or you can go to one of the many beach clubs, the nearest to your villa is just 200 metres downhill. The beautiful and exclusive Villa Mahal Beach club is a five minute walk from Villa Amare. Here you can enjoy a meal or snack in the charming restaurant.
A cruise from the harbour in a Turkish gullet is an absolute must. For a modest price you and friends can have a wonderful day cruising around the islands in a charming gullet, swimming. sunbathing and snorkelling, with a home cooked lunch and afternoon tea included. We have done many of these and highly recommend the experience.
Patara National Park, archeological site and Beach - Patara boasts an amazing 15 km sandy beach, voted one of the top beaches in the world by Times on-line. The beautiful and ancient ruins of the city of Patara, once a major trading port in ancient Lycia, are on the same site. It is also the home of the endangered loggerhead turtles.
Other ancient archaeological sites include Xanthos - a UNESCO world heritage site, Letoon and Pinara, an ancient city with a unique atmosphere and many cut rock tombs.
If you like walking or hiking do try at least some of the famous Lycian Way, a 509 km marked path which cuts through Lycia. The scenery is beautiful.
Lovely waterfalls and gorge at Saklikent, and you can enjoy a fresh trout lunch there for a very modest price. Tlos, a beautifully preserved ancient city with an oval amphitheatre, is worth a stop on the way.
Horse riding is available at Berzigan, a pretty village in a valley.
The General Markets are on a Thursday in Kalkan and Friday in Kas. Kas is also a very pretty place to visit from where you can catch a ferry to the old Greek island of Meis. You will need your passport.
Diving is availale from a professional school in Kalkan.
There is a small shop just a short walk up the hill from your villa. Kisla has five restaurants / cafes within walking distance of your villa. Taxis are plentiful. You can get a boat taxi ride to Kalkan from the beach club just down the hill, a lovely cool way to travel. Look out for turtles on the way.
Car and scooter hire is available locally. The local buses - dolmus-literally meaning stuffed! - are cheap and plentiful to all destinations.
